Tute as a Butt

i know i've said it before, but i think language and it's development is the most amazing thing. and the english language, with all of its quirks... well, it's remarkable that anyone figures it out...let alone a toddler.
i realize that Christian's comprehension of it is pretty vast, but i am daily reminded of just how much he understands, as he begins to verbalize concepts and distinguish between homonyms. he knows what it means to 'put something back'. he says "back" when he does so. he also says "back" when walking or riding something backwards, or patting/jumping on my back (or dave's). how does he not get confused? that's a lot of concepts for the same word!
there are words he has for things that are totally made up, that don't even resemble the actual word. like "pahti" (bike). you'd think by now, since he can say "back" that he'd figure out how to say "bike". but he seems to like having nicknames for things. as well as playing around with words he CAN say. like mommy-na. daddy-da. and mumba mumba mumbi.
he's also coming out with the correct words for things he's never said before. like he was playing with a soap dispenser yesterday, spinning the top of it in circles, and saying, "turn. turn." i didn't tell him to say that. and i've never heard him say it before when turning something. it's like it just bubbled to the surface, out of his understanding.
then there are words like "tute" (cute) that he tries to mimic when we say them to him. and the fun ones like "butt" for button. and "handthum!" for handsome. and "mony" for pony ( i realized yesterday he really knows the difference between a pony and a horse!)... how?
i just wish we could sit him down and get a video of all of the tute things he says, before they all become real grown up sounding words.
he now knows all of the numbers from 0-9 by sight. but he has certain names for some of them that don't sound quite accurate. again, funny.
his favorite shape is the oval. don't ask me why . i think he just likes the way the word sounds. but that is the one he constantly talks about and wants to put in the shape sorter. he calls the star "sahzi", the triangle "ko-ku", and the hexagon "hepsy".
his words for the different trucks are pretty solidified. "minda" is mixer. "ohda" is loader. "deedee" is digger. "cuck" is truck. "beeda" is bulldozer. "nane" is crane. "mumba" is still anything that resembles a mower.
and he is somewhat obsessed with andrew still. he wants to add him in to every conversation about poppy and the trucks.
he's gotten some pretty significant bruises in the last few days, as he discovers his range of motion and the law of gravity. he cries for a "mint" (minute) but is quickly distracted by the next task. i tried to put an ice cube on his forehead yesterday, and he hated it. he wanted me to open the freezer (we were sitting on the kitchen floor next to the freezer drawer) after i'd gotten the ice cube out. he reached for another one and tried to put it on MY forehead... as if to say, 'see how you like it, mom!'
and out of the blue this week he started turning in circles and saying "rosy"... and then he looked at me and said, "teeda". it took me a minute, but i realized he was having a flashback to the lake, when gramsy, keely and i were doing ring around the rosy in the kitchen. i guess the fact that Keely was there, was significant. what's most interesting is that he didn't have a name for Keely when we were at the Lake. so "teeda" is what came out with the memory, now that he has a little more speech awareness.
so that's our 16.5 month update.
i went to a childrens' sale this morning and got a couple of great deals: some newborn diapers, some sneakers, and a big brother book! to name a few.
but i didn't really have the energy to go anywhere else. i've been really run down since the hospital. i find it hard to be up and around for more than an hr. at a time. i guess that's why i'm supposed to be cutting back on heavy activity. fortunately dave is out doing the grocery shopping and a ton of people have offered to do anything we need. not easy to accept, but i def. will if i end up needing something. that's what friends are for!
for now i am just thankful to be home full time, not having to worry about missing work or losing money, or anything like that. such a blessing... we have so many blessings. and now i have time to lay here and count them :)
