Dave and I walked in to visit kyren this morning and the nurse had just removed his cannula! He was breathing completely on his own for the first time in his short little 12 week life! It was amazing to see his entire face without obstruction (except for the feeding tube still in his nose). We didn't get the greatest pics, but will try to post some soon.
He did pretty well all day without the O2 boost, but when I called this evening to see if the NICU staff is allowed to accept homemade cookies (from a cookie swap tonight), the nurse mentioned that he was back on the cannula to help him out. He'd had a busy day!! Breathing is hard work! We are so encouraged by this monumental step-- considering where he was only a few days ago. We know it's all a process and will take time to wean him completely. But it made the 'end in sight' a little more visible. And it made him a little more human. Such a precious face! Can't wait to see it again tomorrow, and smother it with kisses.
