a jazzy night out

Thanks to our family once again, this evening we enjoyed the privilege of a complimentary pair of tickets to the opening concert in Longwood Garden's Jazz Series... just for signing up for our yearlong pass! Gia watched Christian, and off we went (celebrating our Engage-aversary, which was last night). Dave really likes jazz. I don't. But I do really like Dave. So it was a fun night for both of us. Plus, there was a free dessert afterward with the musicians. And when Longwood does food, they do it to the max! Really good coffee, pound cake with fresh whipped cream and giant berries, chocolate dipped cookies, and a vast array of little tarts, eclairs and petits fours. And for me, that was worth sitting through the entire concert :) We also ran into some old friends of my family, so that was fun too. We will definitely be spending more time there-- they have so many neat things to see and do throughout the year! Being in the greenhouse again made me long for the warm weather to return... gotta love it!

Donald Miller wrote an incredible book, "Blue Like Jazz." And as I was reading this entry, I thought of a particular quote that I absolutely adored. I can't quote it directly but it is something to the effect of ... I never really liked jazz music but I watched somebody who loved it get a lot of pleasure out of a jazz performance, and it was the most I've ever enjoyed it myself, watching someone else get something out if... it's something like that but probably more profound sounding :). I thought of this quote in his book for two reasons, one you were discussing jazz and two jazz isn't on your list of top favorites... but because Dave enjoys it, you found enjoyment in his pleasure (even if there were pastries afterward). I think this kind of love is powerful and extremely selfless... because when we can step back and enjoy something purely because someone else truly get something out of it and not for ourselves it says something about our character and our understanding of real love.
||... now for the not so deep thoughts. I went to dictionary.com/thesaurus.com to look up other words for enjoy. I would sound like a fool if I used half of them, so I didn't :D so I may have sounded redundant... but whatev.||
