And yet his voice and the way he expresses himself is in steep competition with his smile for his cutest feature. Every morning, I walk in his room to get him out of bed, and he says, "Hi, Mom. Hi." in his most exuberant, raspy little morning voice. I carry him down the hall and round the corner. He sees his brother for the first time and waves his hand with excitement: "Good Morning, Christian. Good morning!" Like his brother, he addresses everyone by name. But in his own uniqueness, he likes to repeat phrases for emphasis... "Why, Dad? Why?"
His therapist says that it's ok that he can't say his "f's" or "v's" yet. But it makes for some necessary interpretation at times. Food is "sood", Fly is "sy", Have is "has". Christian loves to imitate him, and will now come to me with Kyren's exact inflection and say, "Giz it to me!" or "To insinity and beyond!" We try to practice biting our lower lips and making an "f" sound, but we all laugh together when his attempts to say something like "fun", end in, "fuh, fuh, fuh... SUN!" He IS showing progress in "S" blends... so words that he used to leave the "s" off of all together are now sounding normal... like snake is no longer "nake". This is encouraging-- and we really have no worries for his future. Which, as we look back on those first moments of his traumatic entry to this world, is simply miraculous. Eventually all that will remain as proof of his battle are his scars... which we were looking at today as he ran through the sprinkler, and marveling at the Goodness of God toward "His little Beloved". Even the faint trace of a scar behind his right ear, where a plastic surgeon had to reattach it to his head, reminds us of the fragility that no longer defines him. He is a strong and independent little sweetheart-- and we love him to pieces!!
... you've come a long way, baby! ...
