golden oldies

Growing up, my parents listened to one type of music whenever we were in the car: Oldies. To them it was sentimental... pop music from their teen years that conjured up memories and nostalgia. They knew the year each song was recorded, and what they were doing when they used to listen to it. As I grew older and my own friends were making memories with Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block, and later, with obviously brilliant bands called Wheezer and Blind Melon... i was never quite able to see the draw. I only liked one kind of music.   The music I spent my own childhood learning and loving. And today it's no different. I've tried to expand my horizons... but I find myself always coming back to the same station.
I find myself with songs like this stuck in my head for weeks at a time, belting them out around the house ....

The Shirelles-- some very classy ladies!

... singing them to my husband, searching for them on Pandora, and wanting to pass on the love of  Oldies to my own kids. Will they totally think i'm super sappy? probably.
But someday when they read this, I hope they'll have a listen-- and savor the excellence of yesteryear.
What really struck me when I looked this up on Youtube, was all of the comments people have left beneath the video.  I definitely felt like a super-sap when I got all misty-eyed reading some of them. So many of these songs truly capture the depth of joy and pain caused by love. And if you've ever been in love, it's not hard to relate to them. It's no wonder this song was #1 on the charts.
And even with all the talent that is interspersed among the blah that is out there nowadays,
they really just don't make'm like they used to.
