i didn't have a ton of time or desire to blog while ON vacation-- but here was an email update i sent to mom on tuesday morning of our trip to Hatteras...
figured it is just as good as a blog entry, for posterity's sake!
good morning!
we're having a wonderful time-- weather is fantastic-- trip down was uneventful-- except for the hour plus we spent trying to get C and K to calm down enough to go to sleep at Motel 6. C thought it was just about the most exciting thing he'd ever experienced and couldn't stop bouncing (literally) off the walls and around the big double bed (of his own). k spent the first 20 minutes screaming in his pack and play, confused by the strange surroundings in the middle of the night. . . (i alternately tried bringing him in bed with us, which he didn't understand either) .. and then, once he adjusted, he began to feed off of C's loopiness and they played 'tag' and several forms of 'peekaboo' in the dark, laughing hysterically. this was all somewhere between 2:30 and 4am. we finally stopped saying, "you stop it right now!" and "lie down and go to sleep!!", and just lay there in exhausted agony and waited for them to tire. who knows when they finally did, but everyone slept til around 8:15. dave showered while the boys and i got dressed, and they spent the remainder of our time there pretending to answer the phone (pick it up, say hello, hang up, run away, run back, repeat.) over and over and over, with great delight. it was all i could do to ignore the billions of germs they were touching, and enjoy the childlike joy of the moment. definitely the highlight of their trip so far...
needless to say they've been sleeping well every night since...the first night here going to bed at 6 (k slept for 20 min in the car that morning, C NEVER napped all day). . . and sleeping til 6am!
K has needed his inhaler once a night/or early morning, but otherwise is doing fine. this morning he coughed for a bit but recovered without it around 6am.
watching them 'discover' the ocean for the first time when we got here was magical. k ran straight for the waves, and both of them stood there with us, holding our hands and giggling with each wave that crashed. kyren made up his own sign for it, waving both arms wildly in front of him, as if they were 'crashing' down. soooo precious. he has also been experimenting with several new sounds-- did i tell you before we left he said "ba ba" for bubble (when i got them out and blew some his way), without any prompting? he'd never said 'ba' before! also cheese is back in his vocab. and he did say 'ma ma' once, on command.
yesterday, don't be jealous, he pointed to gia and said, "Gah." she of course is thrilled. he also pointed to a dog on the beach this morning and said, "da." he's fascinated by seagulls, and has started flapping his arms on command. (i'm concerned he's autistic).
i also taught him what an elephant says-- by pursing my lips and blowing a high pitched 'raspberry' noise. (i did this on friday before we left, and thought you should know.) he thinks it is funny every time he does it.
both boys are entertaining everyone with their little charming ways.
currently k is napping and d and c went to see the lighthouse (a few miles away). i am enjoying some peace and quiet!!!! which has been hard to come by. . . but soooo worth every magical, busy moment. only been in the ocean (alone) once, and it was lovely. dolphins swim by a couple times a day... boys have yet to be able to see them.
we took them both in the ocean yesterday, but only for a couple mins. (w/life jackets), as it got a little overwhelming. . . even with not -too-rough surf.
the last 2 evenings the high tide has left a giant tide pool out in front of our house/dunes, and we take them to play in it after supper, to tire them out. perfect!
the spray sunscreen seems to be working great-- we are all wearing 50 and happily so. other people have gotten terrible burns.
the atmosphere is relaxed, with everyone doing their own thing, and pitching in when needed. we don't do our dinner till thurs. evening, and i'm trying to come up with a dessert idea-- forgot to plan something-- and am a little stumped. any ideas? someone already did brownies and ice cream. can't believe i never thought about it!!
perhaps i should copy and paste all this onto the blog :) -- i'm sure i'll think of more-- but wanted to give you a snapshot--
love ya-- miss ya--

I LOVE all this. It sounds like a perfect time. I love you had that quiet moment by yourself. I love that you enjoyed so many new things with the boys: their first sight of the beach this year, k's words. Hope that dessert thing got solved. Not stupid just busy enough to forget.
Can't wait to have some of that summer time with you at the end of the month!! It's fall here!
